It is with great sadness that I inform you RDECOM lost a member of its family today [Aug 5].
Maj. Gen. Harold "Harry" J. Greene was killed during an attack while visiting Camp Qargha, a military training academy in Afghanistan. There were 15 other Soldiers wounded in an attack when a gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform turned his weapon against Americans and other Afghans. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families of those lost or wounded.
As a Brigadier General, Greene served as the deputy commanding general at the Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) and was the senior commander of the Natick Soldier Systems Center, Mass.
Many of you that knew and served with him know the impact that he had on this command and its people. The loss of Greene is certainly felt across the Army and this enterprise. He dutifully served the people of this great nation and dedicated his time at this command making sure Soldiers came first.
Greene was an engineer officer. He held a Ph. D. from the University of Southern California in materials science and master's degrees in engineering from both Rensselaer and Southern California. He understood and was a proponent for the Army's science and technology community and the role RDECOM plays in providing the Soldier what they need.
More recently, Greene, was the deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), where he was responsible for providing acquisition oversight of Army systems and acquisition reform initiatives.
Most of all, we will remember Greene as a great Soldier, officer, and member of our family. He was a man of uncommon and exemplary professionalism, competence, and candor, in the most profound way.
