CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- The Army Field Support Battalion -- Southwest Asia, 402nd Army Field Support Brigade, cased its colors at an inactivation ceremony here July 8.

Overseeing the ceremony were Lt. Col. Kevin Smith, battalion commander, and Sgt. Maj. June Spinler, battalion senior enlisted adviser.

AFSBn-SWA was originally formed in Logistics Support Area Anaconda, Iraq, in August 2004 as the Equipment Support Activity-Iraq Zone under the command and control of the Army Materiel Command's Logistics Support Element-Iraq.

On May 26, 2005, the name changed to the AFSBn-Iraq and was later changed to the 1st Battalion/402nd AFSB. In August 2011, when all Army Field Support Battalions were renamed to reflect geographical support, the 1/402nd AFSB was changed to AFSBn-SWA.

AFSBn-SWA was established to meet the logistics sustainment needs of the Army's logistical command.

"This unit assembled to meet a need, and is now drawing down after that need was met," Smith said during the inactivation ceremony.

AFSBn-SWA was very instrumental in completing the Army's final mission in Iraq, which was a history-making effort to complete the final draw-down mission of Operation New Dawn in Iraq.
