FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - U.S. Army South observed Brazil's and Chile's respective independence days and Chile's Armed Forces Day during a ceremony at U.S. Army South headquarters Sept. 12.

The ceremony was hosted by U.S. Army South commander Maj. Gen. Keith M. Huber and included presentations by U.S. Army South liaison officers Brazilian Army Lt. Col. Raul Rodrigues de Oliveira and Chilean Army Col. Juan Carlos Ramirez.

"There's so much to learn from this interaction," said Huber. "We are very appreciative of [de Oliveira and Ramirez's] presence and for the privilege of being a part of their families."

De Oliveira and Ramirez each conducted presentations during the ceremony that included brief histories of how each of their countries gained independence.

"It's an honor and a privilege to be here sharing this moment with you," said de Oliveira to his U.S. Army South colleagues. "I would also like to highlight that the United States of America was the first to recognize Brazil as a sovereign country."

Ramirez stressed the significance of the ceremony in that it "will help to continue strengthening the relationship and friendship between our armies. "

Brazil celebrates its independence on Sept. 7 and Chile on Sept. 18. Chile's Armed Forces day is Sept. 19.
