Kirwa

Kirchweih or the Bavarian dialect word "Kirwa" stands for annual traditional festivities where Bavarian villages celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of their church. The traditional event is a highlight within every local community with lots of fun, culture, music and traditional food and beverages. They are a great opportunity for all U.S. soldiers and families to experience traditional Bavarian Culture, dances, food and beverages with entertainment for the entire family. Nürnberg Zoo celebrates 75 years

The Nürnberger Tiergarten, famous for its landscaping between centuries-old trees and sandstones, celebrates 75 years at the Schmausenbuck, its current location, with many events throughout the year. To learn more, visit www.tiergarten.nuernberg.de.

The Valhalla temple

The Valhalla temple is a neo-classical structure perched high on the banks of the Danube and is an almost perfect copy of the Parthenon in Athens. Housing over 200 busts and plaques of eminent Germans, the Valhalla temple is a 169-year-old who's-who of German history and is visited by over one million people annually. It is located about an hour south of Grafenwoehr near Regensburg at Walhallastraße 48, 93093 Donaustauf. For more information call 09403 961680.

Tropical Islands

It is starting to get cold outside, and you may feel it is a little too cold to go to the beach, yet you want to extend summer as long as possible. Well you are in luck because Germany has Tropical Islands in Brandenburg near Berlin, the world's largest indoor pool complex nestled in a 660,000 square foot airship hangar. And for just 29 euros you can enjoy a day exploring the tropical rainforests, playing mini golf and swimming in the Balinese lagoon. Tropical Islands is open every day of the year and stays at a pleasant 79 degrees Fahrenheit even in the deepest winter. Film Collection Museum

Hollywood in the Oberpfalz? Well, sort of. There is a film collection museum in Weiden with life-size figures and other movie merchandise for you to view and purchase. The top attractions are Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the Avengers. The museum is located in Weiden, next to the city center, on Max Reger Str. 18 on the first floor. Admission is less than 4 euros for adults and 2 euros for children. Show your military ID and get a discount. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Thursday 1-6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
