The Garrison has been honored by the city of Huntsville for its environmental efforts.
The Garrison was among the recipients of 2008 Air Pollution Control Achievement Awards presented Sept. 24 at the city council chambers. John Callahan, deputy chairman of the city's air pollution control board, presented the plaque to Garrison commander Col. Bob Pastorelli.
"Again it shows the environmental consciousness that the Garrison has for Redstone Arsenal, and working to help protect the environment of the whole community," Terry Hazle, chief of environmental management division in the Garrison's Directorate of Public Works, said.
This was among six awards presented by the city's air pollution control board. The honorees were cited for their efforts to reduce air pollution emissions or to improve environmental education. Besides the Garrison they included Boeing, National Copper & Smelting, Sanmina-SCI, Toyota Motor Manufacturing and Vulcan Materials.
The Garrison was recognized for the following: During construction of a facility for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at Redstone Arsenal last year, instead of burning 1,328 tons of vegetative debris, the Garrison chipped the material and sold it for use as fuel in a wood waste boiler at a mill in Stevenson.
Redstone Arsenal representatives included Pastorelli, Hazle, Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Rickey Cooper and public works director Joe Davis.
