REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- As one of a dozen Army four-star generals, the Army Materiel Command's top leader imparted wisdom to interns, employees and retirees who gathered July 10 for a Marshall Association luncheon, focused on leadership.

Gen. Dennis L. Via, AMC commanding general, encouraged the audience to continue to develop leadership traits, no matter where they were in their career.

"Regardless of position, we all have a role in growing the next generation of leaders," Via said. "Whether it's NASA or the United States Army, we need to have leaders at all levels."

The Marshall Association was created to facilitate the exchange of ideas within the Marshall community, which includes interns, employees, contractors, retirees and leadership. The association hosts several luncheons each year to promote professional development.

Via said learning from failures is a valuable tool in leadership development.

"During my career in the United States Army, I've found that I've learned far more as a leader from my failures than my successes," Via said. "Our missions are enduring missions; never arriving at the destination. Even if we're successful, there is always another mission. We are always learning. We are always adapting. We are always transforming."

Via also said that transformation often comes out of adversity. While it can't be predicted, the general told the audience they should expect to face challenges throughout their career.

"You will face adversity in life and in any occupation that you're involved in. It's not a matter of if, but when… and, while you can't impact the adversity you face, you can impact how you respond," Via said.

Above all, Via said the key to leadership was to treat people with dignity and respect and to never compromise one's integrity.

"Guard your integrity," Via said. "It's the only the trait that can't be taken from you; you have to give it away."
