SILVIS, Ill. -- Three Soldiers from Headquarters, U.S. Army Sustainment Command at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., caddied for professional golfers during the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament at TPC Deere Run in Silvis July 9.
Maj. Max Donaldson, Master Sgt. Jonathan Pollard and Staff Sgt. Shawn Hayden were among a group of Soldiers stationed at Rock Island Arsenal who served as military caddies on pro-am day at the tournament. The three Soldiers from ASC were joined by several Soldiers from First U.S. Army, also headquartered at the Arsenal.
Wearing camo-covered bibs identifying them as military caddies, the Soldiers replaced the pro golfers' regular caddies on the course's 15th hole. They carried bags, pulled out clubs, and walked alongside the pros, chatting and sharing a few laughs as they strolled down the fairway.
At the end of the 484-yard, par 4 hole, the pro golfers and Soldiers exchanged handshakes and pleasantries, with the Soldier usually coming away with an autographed hat, ball or other item.
The military caddie program is part of "Birdies for the Brave," a military outreach initiative sponsored by the PGA Tour. More information is available at the "Birdies for the Brave" Web site: http://www.birdiesforthebrave.org/
