FORT BENNING, Ga., (July 9, 2014) -- The 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, secured their spot in the playoffs when they defeated B Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 17-3 July 1 at Gowdy Field.

"The (fewer) errors you have playing softball, the better off you are," 1/29 coach Chad Nebergall said. "It's a hitter's game so you hit the ball, play good defense and you are going to win most of the time."

1/29 was strong offensively and defensively in the first inning earning four runs, while shutting 1/10 out of the inning. 1/29 batted around in the second inning and strung together eight more runs to lead 12-1 to close out the inning.

1/29 and 1/10 battled to scoreless third and fourth innings, but 1/29 secured the win by outscoring 1/10 three runs to two in the fifth.

"I feel like we've got a pretty good team and we will do all right," Nebergall said about their upcoming games.

But they weren't always confident in their games, he said.

"We've lost two games and (those two) games we definitely should have won," he said. "We walked away from the games going, 'man, we could have beat those teams.' But sometimes its hard to get players out here because of work and your struggling to get guys out here at the last minute ... and we were pulling (in) people who had never played."

Moving forward, 1/29 will have to overcome multiple player issues that could affect their consistency.

"We're going to have to make adjustments because we have guys who are PCSing, guys who are going on leave and some of the other guys we've got to just come together and hit the ball a little bit better," he said. "When everybody's on we put up big numbers - 25 or 30 runs."
