FORT SILL, Okla. -- Fourth of July festivities and fireworks often go hand-in-hand, however, remember to use fireworks in a safe, responsible manner.

Fireworks are prohibited at Fort Sill, in accordance with post regulations.

They are also illegal in Lawton except for designated areas where people may light them July 4, from noon to 11 p.m.

Those areas are:

Lake Lawtonka - Robinson's Landing, in ball field area; north recreation area (day use area, near School House Slough); from Lawton Boat Club north through Group Use 1 area;

Lake Ellsworth - Fisherman's Cove from lead to lake; Ralph's Resort, railroad tracks to dam;

Chandler Creek camping area; Collier Landing camping area.

Keep these safety tips before and during celebrations.

Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device. Light fireworks then back up to a safe distance immediately.

Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that don't ignited fully.

Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

Never shoot fireworks out of your hand.

Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

Never carry fireworks in pocket or shoot them off in glass containers.

After fireworks complete their burning, douse with water before discarding.

Before shooting off fireworks check state, city and county laws.

While the state of Oklahoma permits the sale of most fireworks, individual cities have different ordinances regarding the sale and shooting of fireworks within the city limits. Most metro areas require you to purchase a permit, which allow you to shoot fireworks on specific dates. See www.bigblastonline.com. Select the State and Local Laws tab for more information.
