ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- The four Soldiers assigned to the U.S. Army Sustainment Command who are competing here this week in the command's 2014 Best Warrior Competition were pushed to the limits thus far on on Day Two, after getting only three hours sleep following a grueling opening day.

Participants are mid-way through today's events designed to test their knowledge, skills and stamina. Challenges include a firing range and including a variety of Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills such as administering first aid, reacting to direct fire and leading a squad of Soldiers.

The Soldier and NCO winners will be announced at an awards breakfast here tomorrow morning.

The two winners -- NCO of the Year and Soldier of the Year -- will advance to the next level of competition conducted by the U.S. Army Materiel Command, ASC's higher headquarters. Rock Island Arsenal will be the site of the AMC competition, which takes place July 28-31. Winners at the AMC level will go on to compete at the Army-wide Best Warrior Competition, scheduled for October.

Competition June 24 included an Army Physical Fitness Test; a board appearance before ASC's command sergeant major; a 50-question exam testing general military knowledge; and completion of an essay on a topic unknown to the competitors until test time. Soldiers also competed in urban orienteering, where they were required to find various checkpoints on the Arsenal using only a map during the day and at night.
