High schools: What parents should know

FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 25, 2014) -- Parents of high schoolers at Fort Benning have many options in the Chattahoochee Valley when it comes to enrolling their children in school. To help make the process easier, the Bayonet and Saber has featured information on each of the public high schools in the area. Our staff hopes these overviews have been informative and useful.

Kendrick High School

6015 Georgetown Drive, Columbus

•Has 800 students enrolled in grades 9-12.

•Partners in Education include St. Luke United Methodist Church.

•Kendrick is home to the Academy of Communications Arts and Design. Students must apply for entry and must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and have good attendance and recommendations. Students learn about many aspects of design and communications and get hands-on experience through mentoring and partnerships.

•Athletics offered include: Baseball, basketball, cheerleading, color guard, cross-country, drill team, football, golf, rifle team, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball and wrestling.

•During the 2010-2011 school year, 78 percent of 11th-graders passed the Georgia High School Graduation Test English section and 59 percent passed the mathematics section.

Carver High School

3100 8th Street, Columbus

•Has 1,100 students enrolled in grades 9-12

•CHS was recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a High-Progress School in 2012 for ranking in the top 10 percent for test score improvement.

•Special programs available include: Integrated math, Science, technology magnet, Cisco CCNA Networking Academy, Enhanced Career Education Programs, teacher cadets, Chattahoochee River Ecological Study Internship at Three Rivers AHEC, Coca Cola Space Science Center and Oxbow Meadows.

•Athletics offered include: Football, cross-country, baseball, softball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

•Partners in Education include: Georgia Power Company, Columbus-Fort Benning Medical Association, Sherwood United Methodist Church and Walmart.

Jordan Vocational High School

3200 Howard Ave., Columbus

•Has 775 students enrolled in grades 9-12.

•Mascot is the red jacket.

•Partners in Education include: Industrial Metal Fabricators, Goldens' Foundry and Machine Company and Kysor-Warren.

•Athletics offered include: Baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, rifle, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball and wrestling.

•During the 2010-2011 school year, 74 percent of Jordan ninth-graders scored a "pass" or "pass plus" on Georgia's end of course test in literature and composition, 54 percent scored "pass" or "pass plus" in mathematics and 28 percent scored "pass" or "pass plus" in U.S. history.
