Don't delay hurricane preparation

FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 18, 2014) -- With hurricane season under way, installation operations officials said Families shouldn't delay in preparing for an emergency.

Hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30, with the strongest threats of activity in August and September. Kerry Johnson, plans chief for the Installation Operations Center, said residents should always take warnings of weather conditions seriously.

"We have a lot warnings in place, but people have the tendency to wait until the last minute to respond," he said.

Johnson said lack of preparation could lead to problems such as finding shelter or having enough supplies to last for several days.

A post mass notification system is used to provide residents with adequate time by sending messages by phone and email. Fort Benning also has a "Giant Voice" warning system that alerts individuals of impending severe weather, Johnson said. It is routinely tested every Saturday at noon.

Emergency kits should include water, blankets, batteries, non-perishable food, spare clothing and an extra supply of medication for the elderly and disabled. A battery-operated radio is an effective way to stay informed of weather updates, Johnson said.

Families can visit Army Community Service on Baltzell Avenue for emergency item lists and first aid kits.

Additionally, Fort Benning has several evacuation locations for Families, including Audie Murphy Gym, Briant Wells Indoor Pool and Freedom Hall.
