FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 18, 2014) -- Want to try out for the 2014 Fort Benning Doughboys football team? Well, it's not too late.

Coach Jason Gibson and his staff have already begun their search for this year's team and are out on Stillwell Field on Hall Street across from the post office and Briant Wells Field House on Main Post looking for the next iteration of Doughboys.

Training camp is from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through June 27 with the official tryouts July 14-15. Both are open to active-duty Soldiers, said Spencer Folds, Doughboys general manager.

"Players who are interested in playing this year are highly encouraged to attend camp for the next couple of weeks," he said. "We will be teaching the athletes our offensive and defensive schemes to start familiarizing how we operate, which in return will make them stand out more for the tryouts in July."

The workouts aren't conditioning oriented, Folds said, but more on what will be expected of the players once they are selected.

"Practices are predominately structured to teaching the athletes their individual responsibilities during each play," he said. "We will not focus on conditioning that much during these next couple of weeks, but more of coaching the guys on assignments."

While Folds encourages prospects to be at every practice for the next two weeks, the team will not be selected until July.

"The training camp is just for the benefit of the athlete," he said. "We will not be cutting anyone during these next couple weeks. Athletes that make every practice during training camp will be a step ahead of everyone else during the tryouts in July."
