Fort Belvoir, Va. (June 12, 2014) - Ten custom-built sailing vessels, all handcrafted of cardboard and duct tape, took to the waters of Fort Belvoir's North Post Pool to compete in the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation's annual Cardboard Regatta, Saturday.
Each ship's crew, consisting of a single pilot or a captain and first mate team, launched their vessels in the shallows and raced the length of the pool to claim prizes and have a lot of fun. Participants spent anywhere from one or two days to several weeks constructing their unique vessels and preparing for the perilous crossing that consistently draws a large turnout to the Family-centered event.
Staying afloat became as large a priority as making it to the finish line.
Sailing teams included returning duo, Team Nicette (crew: Janette Ingling and Nicki Burgos); Team Lucy (captain: Lucy Ingling, 4); Team Jellyfish (captain: Lauren Ingling, 8); the Pirate Ship (captain: Julian Burgos, 4); the U.S.S. Minion (crew: Ainsley Carmichael, 7, and Cadence Carmichael, 5), Team Viking (captain: Graham Bartolomei), Pirate Ship Revenge (captain: Jorja Herron, 6); Team Pirate (crew: Luke Semancik, 7, and Liam Martin-Hernandez, 8); the Forrest Floaters (crew: Sara Forrest and Julian Forrest); and Team Wet Wedgies (captain: Julie Morris).
Ryan Moran, Fort Belvoir Community Center director, and Romel Voellm, Community Center special events coordinator, hosted the Regatta with members of the DFMWR staff and presented awards to the winners.
All participants received special plaques and certificates for their participation.
