SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii--The 2014 U.S. Army Pacific Warrior Challenge (WC14) began with 17 professional Soldiers competing against one another in hopes of earning the title of USARPAC Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year.
The USARPAC competition runs June 9 -- 13 with the WC14 website being updated daily at http://www.usarpac.army.mil/wc14/index.asp .
Soldiers will be tested in marksmanship to maneuvering a day and night land navigation course to other various tactical battle drills as well as professionally showcasing their abilities in a board setting.
Participants in the WC14 have been selected amongst their peers throughout the Pacific region.
"I went up against a lot of great Soldiers just to get here," said Staff Sgt. Andrew Gerber-Majors, a military police officer assigned to 247th Military Police Detachment, U.S. Army Japan. "It's an honor to be out here today representing my unit. I'm here to win, but I'm also here to learn. There are too many great NCOs from around the Pacific not to walk away with a stronger knowledge-base. Every NCO needs to be well-rounded and you need to be around great NCOs to become a better NCO."
Sgt. Maj. Thomas Sparks, USARPAC Plans and Training senior enlisted advisor said the competition is designed to showcase the Soldiers' competence, character, and commitment signifying the essence of Army professionals.
"Our challenges here are similar to the challenges and obstacles the winning Soldiers will face at the Best Warrior Competition held in Washington D.C.," said Sparks. No matter who wins the coveted title each of the Soldiers participating here this week has shown that they possess a winning spirit.
"Winning this competition would mean a lot to me. I don't feel this way just because I trained and worked hard to get here, but because my chain of command and family have invested a lot of time in me to get here. I'm not doing this for me anymore; I'm doing this for everyone who believed in me and supported me the entire way." said Pfc. Bryant Sheehy, a communication specialist with 25th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 25th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, U.S. Army Alaska. ""
USARPAC Soldier and NCO of the Year will compete in the DA-level Best Warrior Competition.
