The 198th Infantry Brigade smashed the 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 17-2 June 5 at Gowdy Field during Commander's Cup softball.

The 198th led 7-0 by the end of the second inning. Offensively, Paul Murphy, coach for 198th Inf. Bde., hit a single with two RBI's while 1-19 IN went three-up, three-down.

In the fourth inning, 198th nearly doubled their run lead while 1-19 got on the scoreboard in the fourth, but trailed 13-1.

While 1-19 struggled with making long outs on fly balls, Murphy said the 198th was focused on the in field, both offensively and defensively.

Base hits and a lack of fly balls was the key to 198th ultimately winning, Murphy said.

"Our goal was just base hits and let them make the errors fielding the ball," he said.

1-19 IN made a final run in the fifth inning but the game was called due to the run rule.

Murphy said he was able to focus the team following their previous loss and was aided by two practices since the loss.

"We came in with our heads high today because on Monday, we came out of a loss and our heads were low," he said. "Then today, I said we are just out here to have some fun and keep hitting the sticks and just play it by inning. Everyone was motivated after that loss to get this win."
