Heidelberg, Germany -USAREUR and IMCOM-Europe will host the Defense Task Force on Sexual Assault in the Military Services September 29 and 30 as it conducts its worldwide assessment of Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force installations.
Members of the Task Force would like to provide an opportunity for the public, or victims or witnesses of past sexual assaults to meet individually with a member of the Task Force. However, victims or witnesses involved in any incident subject to an ongoing or upcoming judicial proceeding will not be seen, because the Task Force will not risk endangering the investigation. The Task Force wants to make sure the public, victims and witnesses are heard and to have an opportunity to tell their story to someone outside of the military's chain of command.
The issue of sexual assault is important and the visit by the Task Force is also a way to raise awareness of the problem.
When the worldwide assessment is complete, information gathered may be included in a report to Congress in 2009 about trends in the military on sexual assault programs and response.
The Task Force will be available at the Community Shopping Center, building 3850, room 222 on September 29 from 1330 to 1530 and September 30 from 1315 to 1515. Additional appointments can be made through the U.S. Army Garrison Heidelberg Sexual Assault Response Coordinator at 0170-609-2862.
This event is open to the entire USAREUR and INCOM Europe communities.
While visiting the USAREUR and IMCOM Europe Commands, the Task Force Members will also meet with the installation senior leadership to discuss the prevention and response process.
