Fort Belvoir, Va. (May 15, 2014) - Military spouses in the Fort Belvoir community got away from their daily stresses during a Military Spouse Appreciation Night Masquerade Ball, hosted by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Friday at the Belvoir Community Center.
Spouses danced, used Jamberry Nails and took advantage of the light appetizers, chocolate fondue and massages available, according to Romel Voellm, Community Center Special Events Coordinator.
"This event is a chance for all the spouses to be recognized, whether a male or female active-duty spouse," said Voellm. "It's a chance to relax, dance, and meet other spouses."
Having a chance to relax was the best part of the night, according to Addison Delany, Lorton resident.
"To be able to sit down and not have to worry about what your children are doing across the table from you is very relaxing," said Delany. "I feel less stressed than when I showed up."
Spending time with their friends and meeting new people was another benefit to the event, according to Dora Sanchez, Lewis Village resident. Sanchez likes the bonding that takes place spending time with fellow spouses.
"We become better friends from spending time with each other," said Sanchez. "It helps grow the support that we give one another."
Other spouses like Celia Lozada, Woodlawn Village resident, enjoyed the activities provided. Lozada got a massage and plans on getting another one.
"I got their business card," said Lozada, "So, I hope to see them again."
U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir Commander Col. Gregory D. Gadson and USAG Fort Belvoir Command Sgt. Maj. Scott E. Guillory addressed the spouses before the event, and let them know their service and sacrifice doesn't go unnoticed.
"One night is not enough to pay homage to your sacrifice to Soldier's careers and our nation," said Gadson. "But, this is our chance to say thank you to all of you."
Gadson added that Soldiers and servicemembers wouldn't have the successful careers they do if it wasn't for the sacrifice of their spouses.
"I wouldn't have the career I've had without the support of my wife," said Gadson.
Though she appreciates the installation organizing the event, Delany said she doesn't need any one to show her appreciation for being a military spouse.
"This is my life," said Delany. "I knew what I was getting into when I got married."
