WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 8, 2014) -- Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. John F. Campbell and his wife, Ann, were honored Tuesday, as recipients of the 2014 Advocacy Award by the chapter of the Easter Seals organization which serves the national capital region.

The two were chosen as recipients of the award for their commitment to Soldiers and their families.

"Through their service, commitment to the Army Family Covenant, and volunteer efforts, the Campbells have made a difference in the lives of thousands of Soldiers and their families," said Phil Panzarella, who served as chair for the 2014 Advocacy Awards Dinner.

The Easter Seals Advocacy Awards have for 10 years now "recognized leaders who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to advancing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities or special needs," reads an Easter Seals press release.

"It is an honor to devote this 10th anniversary of the Advocacy Awards to recognize service members and their families who have answered our nation's call, and to recognize those who join with us as we in turn empower our veterans, warriors and their families to thrive in their communities beyond their call of duty," says Lisa Reeves, president and chief executive officer of Easter Seals region that serves Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

During the evening, Campbell and Ann took the stage to speak to attendees.

"It is an absolute honor and privilege for Ann and I to be here tonight to accept this award on behalf of all the military families that have sacrificed so much over the last 13-plus years," the general said.

"We really do appreciate all that Easter Seals does for all of our military families -- when service men and women return home from combat and must readjust to life -- especially with an injury or a disability -- it can be a long, complex, and sometimes really overwhelming process," he said. "Easter Seals' military and veterans initiative responds to this call for action."

The general said the Easter Seals program helps military families and Soldiers with programs that help veterans, spouses, and wounded warriors find jobs; provide respite care for military families; and enable homeless veterans to reintegrate into society and the labor force.

Also a recipient of the 2014 Advocacy Awards was Hollister K. "Holly" Petraeus.
