REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (May 5, 2014) -- Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno visited the U.S. Army Materiel Command headquarters here Friday, to receive an "AMC Futures" briefing.
The discussion highlighted AMC's support to Army priorities; AMC's global alignment and delivery of combat readiness; thoughtful stewardship of available resources; adapting and shaping AMC for the future; and how AMC will synchronize innovation to support the future force.
"We are focused on delivering readiness to the joint forces in support of Army priorities," AMC Commander Gen. Dennis L. Via told Odierno and other briefing attendees. "As always, the warfighter remains our top priority."
Via told Odierno that he had recently updated AMC's strategic priorities, in concert with Army leadership and focused on shaping the command for the future. He stressed the strong relationship AMC has forged with its partners and customers, including the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology, and the Army staff.
"I'm very proud of the great work done at AMC," said Odierno. "Your flexibility is clear in support of our forward deployed troops, Combatant Commanders, and our Army forces."
Via highlighted AMC's efforts to provide predictive readiness to the warfighter through AMC's Materiel Common Operating Picture, demonstrating how AMC tracks equipment throughout its lifecycle.
The chief cited readiness as one of the biggest challenges with the return to garrison operations.
"Are we set up to sustain readiness levels as we become an expeditionary force? This is very critical to our Army," Odierno said. "Our ability to figure out how we sustain readiness throughout our Army is key to our future."
The briefing was held in AMC's Global Operations Center. More than 30 AMC entities participated from bases, camps, depots, arsenals and installations around the world. Demonstrating AMC's global reach, each Army Field Support Brigade commander briefed the chief of staff on areas including equipment retrograde, support to Regionally Aligned Forces, Army readiness, and Logistics Readiness Centers. The command's AFSBs are situated in areas including Korea, Europe, and the Middle East.
Senior representatives from U.S. Army Forces Command and the Army staff also participated in the event.
Odierno last visited AMC headquarters in the fall of 2012. He received an "AMC Futures" briefing in January 2013.
