Fort Huachuca hosted two well-attended events Saturday-- the Sexual Assault Sexual Harassment, or SASH Prevention Dash and the Month of the Military Child celebration, or MOMC.
Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, or BOSS, kicked off the day's activities with their 5K run/3K walk which started and ended outside Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, or TMAC. The SASH Prevention Dash supports the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program and commemorates April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
"I am impressed with the turnout," said Staff Sgt. Rico Rico, Boss installation president.
While 200 people were projected to attend, the SASH Prevention Dash brought out 293 runners and walkers. Due to the unexpected attendance, only the first 200 participants to finish received ribbons. The event was open to all authorized Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons, and leashed pets were welcome.
The run/walk event led to the main festivities held at TMAC, the MOMC celebration. Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Child Youth School Services and Army Community Service served as the main hosts of the event, however, MOMC included a variety of installation organizations and military units volunteering and business sponsors.
"Most events have different designations, but this one is for children and that's what makes it stand out," explained Angie Babcock, Parent Central Services Office outreach services director.
Approximately 1,000 people attended the youth-oriented afternoon. Children had the opportunity to play carnival-themed games for prizes and participate in arts and crafts.
"I like playing games," said Serenity Dishman, 6. She explained her favorite activity had been the bowling set, which was sponsored by United States Bowling Congress members to promote the youth leagues at Desert Lanes.
Upon entering TMAC, Families visited ACS and FMWR tables adorned not only with take-home goodies for all ages but information about their programs and upcoming events.
"There's no question too big or too small," said Lois Sagmoe, ACS Exceptional Family Member Program system navigator. "We'll make sure they get to the right place at the right time and get the services they need because we love nothing more than supporting our Soldiers and military Families."
Some of the parties involved provided information on health and safety. Volunteers from Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center distributed information on children's nutrition, sleep habits and other health tips. On display outside the facility, the Fort Huachuca Fire Department helped Families learn about fire safety in a mock fire and smoke demonstration. During the event parents could also have identification cards made for their children.
Families were introduced to several animal-related activities. A wildlife exhibit was presented by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which took place next to the Huachuca Area Herpetological Association's snake exhibition.
Outside TMAC, Buffalo Corral gave brief horse rides to those interested. The 18th Military Police Detachment K-9 Unit also set up and performed a K-9 demonstration early in the event.
Other outdoor displays included the 305th Military Intelligence Battalion's tent containing geospatial intelligence equipment.
MOMC was completely free to all in attendance. In addition to the games, displays and other activities, popcorn, cotton candy and a lunch were served at no charge. MOMC patrons were also welcomed by live music provided by the Military Intelligence Corps Band and DJ Scott Dewar from SKIES Unlimited.
