The ICU at Afghanistan's National Military Hospital is one of the country's best, but captain Deborah Beltzer -Harper says she's learned that quality is based on what's available.

"We're so setup in states for routines we expect labs, certain treatments to be done and then here they're just initiating protocols."

As a medical mentor, a registered nurse, her focus is to help improve overall patient care. To make a difference

"And I love being able to do that, to make a difference with the staff and the patients."

A captain in the Army Reserves, she's part of a U.S. Medical team that routinely visits the hospital.

Back home, she works as a nursing education coordinator at a Florida county jail. Returning to military service lets her to serve her country and her expertise.

It's an experience, she calls both professional and personal.

"If I can improve one patients care, then I've done my job."
