FORT LEE, Va. (April 10, 2014) -- The Occupational Health department at Kenner Army Health Clinic invites the community to an outreach event, April 22, 9-11 a.m.

Information about occupational health services will be discussed and provided to Fort Lee's civilian employees and military members.

Occupational Health Nurses Week is set to be celebrated April 20-26 with the theme "Occupational Health Nurses: Leading the Way for Health and Safety."

"The Department of the Army staffs more than 75 Occupational Health Clinics worldwide that includes services that promote the health and safety of the individual, the unit, the workplace and the community," said Lt. Col. Younghee Song, Occupational Health Clinic and Preventive Medicine Clinic, chief.

Fort Lee's occupational health nurses serve active duty members and federal employees at Fort Lee focusing on personnel in hazardous positions such as those exposed to excessive noise, working in eye hazard areas, respiratory protection and pregnancy surveillance.

"Most people understand the role of a nurse in a clinical setting though many are not aware of nurses who work in promoting and protecting the health of installation workers," Song explained.

Nationwide, occupational health nurses take their skills to industries like manufacturing, construction and the health care industry.

These nurses have special knowledge of workplace hazards and the relationship to the employee's health status. They understand industrial hygiene principles of engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. These specially trained registered and licensed practiced nurses also have knowledge of toxicology and epidemiology as related to employees and their worksites.

In addition to keeping employees healthy and ready to perform their duties, occupational health nurses manage occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries.

During the Kenner outreach event, the following services will be explained and available for participants:

• Respiratory Protection

• Hearing Conservation

• Vision Conservation

• Pregnancy Surveillance

• Adult Immunizations

• Ergonomics

• Nutrition

• Workman's Compensation

• Blood Pressure clinic

"Kenner's Occupational Health Clinic is dedicated to the Fort Lee workforce to promote workplace safety, healthy lifestyles and prevention of injury," said Song. "Fort Lee employers clearly understand the importance of healthy employees, which impacts productivity in the workplace."

He noted, "We look forward to welcoming the community on April 22."
