Rock Island Arsenal, Ill. -- Maj. Gen. John Wharton, commanding general, U.S. Army Sustainment Command and senior mission commander of Rock Island Arsenal, hosted mayors from the Quad Cities area for a working lunch in Quarters One here, April 2.
The meeting took place two days before Wharton spoke to business executives and local elected officials at a Quad Cities Chamber banquet highlighting the relevance of the Arsenal's missions, especially following the drawdown of two wars.
Discussions April 2 included the global reach of RIA to sustain Army and joint forces, theater support in Iraq and Afghanistan, installation improvements targeting energy efficiencies, the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center, and recent visits by Army Materiel Command leaders including Gen. Dennis Via, AMC commanding general, and Lt. Gen. Patricia McQuistion, AMC deputy commanding general (and former commanding general of ASC).
Also in attendance at the luncheon were Maj. Gen. Michael Smith, deputy commanding general, First Army; D. Scott Welker, deputy to the commander, ASC; Col. Elmer Speights Jr., Garrison commander, RIA; Command Sgt. Maj. James Spencer, ASC; Major John Thodos, East Moline, Ill.; Mayor Bill Gluba, Davenport, Iowa; Mayor Dennis Pauley, Rock Island, Ill.; Mayor Scott Raes, Moline, Ill.; and Mayor Tom Conrad, Silvis, Ill.
