FORT BENNING, Ga., (April 2, 2014) -- If you're new to the area, Uptown Columbus is a great place to spend some time. The Uptown Concert Series kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. with a free concert featuring local band DSOS. And Saturday starts Market Days on Broadway from 9 a.m. to noon, which features garden produce and more.

Elizabeth Hurst, vice president of community relations and marketing for Uptown Columbus, said there would be more than 100 vendors selling handmade, homemade or homegrown items. A couple of Saturdays ago, I spent some time on Broadway. There were fewer vendors, but the wares ran the gamut from hand-crafted pens to fresh, unpasteurized milk.

One young entrepreneur I met sells macarons -- French cookies made with egg whites and almond flour, which is different from macaroons. Luckily owner Josephine Voyles, who just turned 14, displays a poster explaining the differences and she offers samples.

Josephine's Macarons sells four flavors of macarons -- lemon, vanilla, coconut, and chocolate and coconut. After months of market research and perfecting her recipe, which uses about two dozen organic egg whites for a 150 cookies, she launched her business in December. When her Family moves to Fort Jackson, S.C., this summer, she plans to move her business to Columbia.
