FORT BENNING, Ga., (April 2, 2014) -- The Maneuver Center of Excellence Spikers defeated 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, Wednesday during Carol Volleyball League action at Smith Fitness Center.
The MCoE Spikers jumped out with a five-point lead due to miscues by 1-10 FA in the service and volley game. But, 1-10 FA was able to even the score at 8-8, which led to back-and-forth scoring until the Spikers built a five-point lead at the end of the set and finished out with a 21-16 win.
Despite the win, the team had issues with serves or passes out of bounds.
"A lot of it is just us being able to gauge our hitting techniques," team captain Earl Wilson said. "A lot of us who are strong-handed (have to step) maybe two or three feet back from the line."
In Set 2, neither team built a big lead, until 1-10 FA had a four-point run, which left the Spikers trailing for most of the set.
"Hats off to (1-10 FA) for really mounting a comeback," he said. "Most of the second match they were winning."
Junior Sione's serve helped the MCoE Spikers recover by seven points, putting them back in the lead. Eventually, the Spikers won Set 2, 21-19.
"Our strategy is really taking advantage of the three hits," Wilson said. "The first hit you definitely want to bump, the second hit you want to set and you want to not only set the ball but you want to set it to a certain person. So before each exchange and each serve, we would already have it set in our mind who we wanted the third hit to go to."
With the win, the MCoE Spikers move to 3-1.
