Fort Belvoir, Va. (March 27, 2014) - The Villages at Belvoir sponsored its first community-wide yard sale of the year Saturday and Sunday to give residents the opportunity to sell items to the public.

The yard sales have been scheduled for the third weekend of each month for at least four years but the event was postponed a week this month because of the unusually cold weather, according to Jennifer Watkins, The Villages at Belvoir, marketing manager.

The hours for the community-wide yard sales are 8 a.m.-1 p.m. All residents are encouraged to participate and no prior authorization is required if hosting a yard sale on a community-wide yard sale weekend. However, if a resident wants to have a yard sale on any other date they are required to receive prior authorization from their community management office before doing so.

"It just gives the residents the opportunity to clean out the garage and closets," Watkins said. "They can get rid of things that they haven't used in a while or don't need anymore and make some money."

The yard sales also help newly arrived residents, as well as Families leaving on (permanent change of station) orders, according to Watkins.

"They might be trying to lighten their load before the PCS," she explained.

Leslie Narcotta, a military spouse, hosted a yard sale on her porch Sunday. Her Family just arrived at Fort Belvoir in January and she found some things that she didn't need as she was unpacking. She was excited to sell some of the items during the yard sale.

"I think it is great," Narcotta said. "I think it is awesome that everyone participates in the community and is able to help each other out."

She was selling toys, lamps, wine glasses and other items Sunday. In addition, clothing from her own business, Leslie's Lovely Creations, were on sale. Narcotta said there was a lot of foot traffic Saturday when she saw a few of her neighbors selling items.

"We came outside and there were people walking up and down the street," she said. "It was kind of nice to get out and walk around the neighborhood and see what was there."

The Villages at Belvoir features new and historic homes within 15 distinct villages. The communities are located on the installation near the Potomac River.

The community-wide yard sales are only scheduled during the warm weather months, according to Watkins. The yard sales always feature a lot of great items at low prices, she added.

The next community-wide yard sale will be April 26-27 instead of the third weekend of the month, because the third weekend in April is Easter weekend. The other 2014 yard sale dates include May 17-18, June 21-22, July 19-20, Aug. 16-17 and Sept. 20-21.
