ANSBACH, Germany (March 12, 2014) -- St. Patrick's Day is the one day a year that everyone is Irish, and, candidly speaking, a day many people look forward to celebrations involving drinking. Several pints of Irish dry stout and other beverages of choice are likely to be consumed during celebrations at parades, pubs and the like.
The potential for consuming greater levels of alcohol can also make it a day to be responsible. Deaths in car crashes are very common around St. Patrick's Day. Two out of five automobile accident deaths between 2006 and 2010 involved a inebriated driver during St. Patrick's Day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
These safety tips can help revelers safely navigate all the fun and festivities this St. Patrick's Day:
-- Coordinate transportation -- If you plan to drink, do not get behind the wheel. In Germany, the legal limit is lower (0.05 percent blood alcohol content), the beer is stronger, and the Polizei more stringently enforce impaired driving laws. Select a designated driver, arrange for a cab, take the train, or plan to stay near your celebration. If you plan to have a celebration at your home, make sure guests hand over their keys.
-- Eat and Stay Hydrated -- Persons with less bodily fluid (i.e., water) become more impaired quicker than persons with more bodily fluid. Keeping hydrated will also help to minimize hangover symptoms the next day. Drinking on an empty stomach also results in greater impairment. Having food in your stomach will slow the movement of alcohol into the blood stream.
-- Be Cautious on the Roads -- There are a number of accidents caused by people driving under the influence. If you are safe and sober and planning to be on the roads, remain very aware of what is going on around you. Drivers should also be on the lookout for intoxicated walkers who may be stumbling into crosswalks.
-- Use Your Battle Buddies -- There is safety in numbers, always be sure you are looking out for one another. Make sure everyone stays out of trouble and returns home safely.
