Winners of the coveted Area I Commander's Cup were recognized at an awards ceremony March 5 at the Carey Physical Fitness Center on Camp Casey. The competition, which ran from July through December 2013, marked the first time Warrior Country units had to compete not only in sports but in a wide variety of other activities that the Army uses to build resilience, including such things as college enrollment, volunteerism, and recreational events. The awards were in three categories based on unit size, large, medium, small. Each of the top three winning units was from the 2nd Infantry Division: large, Company C, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division; medium category, 61st CBRN Company; small category, Company D, 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment. Each of the top three winning units received a traveling trophy, $200 in unit funds and a $100 AAFES gift card. Col. John M. Scott, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I, hosted the ceremony, and after brief remarks introduced the guest speaker, Maj. Gen. Thomas S. Vandal, Commanding General, 2nd Infantry Division.
