Presidents' Day, February 17th, is a chance to celebrate not only Washington and Lincoln, but also all other presidents. We honor these great men for their countless contributions to our Nation and for their unparalleled influence on America. Through faith, strength of character, and determination of spirit, these men brought order and unity in times of chaos and division.
This same spirit can be found through our Army Family. Many of you will be traveling to visit friends and family. Plan your trip using the Travel Risk Planning System at https://safety.army.mil . This site will help you identify those risks commonly associated with travel and to develop a plan to reduce those risks. There are still winter weather hazards at many of our Garrisons. Use all the tools available to plan accordingly. We value your talents and contributions and want you to return safely.
At some of our Garrisons, the weather is warming up. We want to remind grilling enthusiasts and basic backyard cooks alike to remember grilling safety as the outdoor cooking season heats up. In an average year, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 7,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues. Gas and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors. Place the grill well away from siding, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Enjoy the warmer weather.
Finally, take care of your mental health. Use this opportunity to unwind. Get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. Spending time with friends and Family in the great outdoors is a wonderful opportunity. Whatever your plans may be for the holiday, we all must work together to prevent on- and off- duty accidents.
