MEMORANDUM FOR All U.S. Army Security Assistance Command Employees
SUBJECT: Presidents Day 2014
1. On 17 February we take time to honor a prestigious group of citizens, the 43 public
servants that have selflessly provided their leadership and wisdom as the 44 Presidents
of the United States of America and Commanders-in-Chief of our Armed Forces.
2. Presidents Day was originally celebrated by our Republic in 1879 as Washington's
Birthday to honor the accomplishments of President George Washington. Following the
Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, Washington's Birthday became a recognized
federal holiday that fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, hence often
being referred to as Presidents Day. Now we use this day to honor all past and present
Presidents for their contributions toward making America one of the modern world's
oldest Republics and a leader in the global community.
3. Over the courses of our careers, we both have been inspired by some great quotes
made by our Presidents. These quotes provide the learned insights of our past and
present leaders, many profoundly shaping our American way of life. We also feel they
add great perspective to our lives. Theodore Roosevelt's "It is hard to fail, but it is
worse never to have tried to succeed" and Dwight Eisenhower's "Accomplishments will
prove to be a journey, not a destination" are among our favorites. You can find other
notable Presidential quotes on the USASAC homepage and we will also publish one
daily on the USASAC Facebook page. Please take a moment to reflect upon why we
honor our Presidents and how they represent our Nation's and Army's core values.
4. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. As a member of the
USASAC Family, we need all of you to return to work safe and sound after a
well-earned holiday.
