SANTA FE, N.M., -- On Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, Marcy Leavitt, Texas/New Mexico branch chief, Regulatory Division, Albuquerque District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was the recipient of the 2014 New Mexico Earth Science Achievement Award. The ceremony took place at the Capitol Building in conjunction with Earth Science Day.
"This award goes to Ms. Leavitt for outstanding contributions in advancing the role of earth science in areas of public service and public policy in New Mexico," said Paul Bauer, associate director and principal geologist, New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, New Mexico Tech. "This award, sponsored by the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, a division of New Mexico Tech in Socorro, N.M., began in 2003 in order to honor those often unrecognized champions of earth science issues which are vital to the future of New Mexico," he said. "Selections were made following a statewide nomination process."
L. Greer Price, director and state geologist, New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources, New Mexico Tech, presented the award.
"I truly appreciate receiving this award," said Leavitt. "But I could not have accomplished this without the help of my coworkers. This was truly a group effort and I thank everyone for your support," she said.
Leavitt has had a long and illustrious career as a guardian of New Mexico's water resources. Prior to joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in January 2012, Leavitt spent 23 years with the New Mexico Environment Department, where she served as bureau chief of both the Ground Water Quality Bureau (1993-2003) and the Surface Water Quality Bureau (2003-2008).
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources is a non-regulatory research and service division of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. This bureau has served as the geological survey for the state of New Mexico for 87 years.
Dave Gutzler, a professor in the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department at University of New Mexico, was also an award recipient. He was presented an award for his outstanding contributions in advancing the role of earth science in areas of applied science and education in New Mexico.
