FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 29, 2014) -- One of Fort Benning's own Junior Rifle Club members qualified for upcoming Junior Olympic Games.

Shelby Huber, 16, earned a trip to Colorado Springs after posting an automatic qualifying score of 575 Jan. 11 in the Men's 60-shot Precision Air Rifle event at the 2014 Georgia State Junior Olympic Trials in Dahlonega, Ga.

"States hold their own qualifiers and the winners of those matches proceed to the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center," said Staff Sgt. George Norton, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and advisor to the club. "Other spots for the JO's are filled by competitors who shot an automatic qualifying score based on their age qualification. These scores are set fairly high and very few meet this qualification standard."

Huber has been a member of the Ft. Benning Juniors for two years and there is a lot of potential for him in the sport, Norton said.

"It was no surprise to see him qualify because he has dedicated himself by training hard in preparation for this match," Norton said.

The Junior Olympics will be held April 21-27. Before that, Huber will compete in the U.S. Army National Junior Air Rifle Championships Feb. 24-26 at the USAMU's Pool Indoor Range Complex.
