BETHESDA, Md. - The men's varsity Washington Area Military Athletic Conference basketball season began the final weekend of January, and after four early season tournament championships, the Fort Myer Generals are delivering additional knockout punches.

Complimented by a defense in clamp-down mode, General long-range shooters three-point field goaled Bethesda into submission during the WAMAC season opener at Walter Reed National Medical Center's fitness center Jan. 25.

In the 91-60 victory, Fort Myer's near-perfect perimeter shooting in the opening minutes put the Naval Support Activity Bethesda Warriors in a deep hole. The Generals missed only one shot during the first four minutes of play as Terrell Moorer downed three 3-pointers and varsity team newcomer Thomas Mason connected on consecutive long-distance shots during the first half.

Moorer completed the first 20 minutes of play with 22 points on his way to a team-high 27 points. The former All-Army standout felt the team's pace - both offensively and defensively - was the key to expanding a first-half lead that grew to as large as 27 points.

"Today, the shots fell quick, and we were able to jump into the defensive press," Moorer said. "Everybody kind of got into the groove of things."

Sean Hackshaw and Ernest Hassell each canned field goals from beyond the three point arc in the first half as Fort Myer enjoyed a 47-21 advantage at the intermission.

Following the conference season opener, Moorer was quick to praise the squad's reserves including Albert Glover and Maurice Robinson, who combined to score 20 second-half points.

After four consecutive tournament championships to start the 2013-2014 season, assistant coach Bryant Hairston commented that the General's overall performance was the best he has seen this hardcourt season.

"I think today's start was the best start we've had this season after four straight tournaments," Hairston said. "Everything is looking good, but there's always stuff to work on."

For their WAMAC home opener at the Fort Myer fitness center, the Generals defeated the Joint Base Andrews varsity 87-76. Hackshaw led Fort Myer with 22 points and Deon Coleman added 16.

The Generals get back to work with back-to-back home games: Feb. 1, the Generals host Fort Meade followed by the National Capital Region Marines Feb. 2.
