FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 22, 2014) -- McBride Elementary School is getting a new school, which is to be completed by the 2016-2017 school year, said Fordyce Stone, education operations manager for the Georgia/Alabama school district. The groundbreaking for the McBride construction will be at 1-2 p.m. Feb. 3. The school will be located on the field next to McBride's current location.

"(The Georgia and Alabama district) has not had a new school for many years and we are excited," Stone said.

McBride will be the first school in the district to undergo construction and will cost about $32 million, he said. McBride was selected to undergo renovation because of its age. It was built in 1966 and has very old wiring, piping and HVAC units. The average school on Fort Benning is 43 years old.

The school will have a 21st century design, Stone said. It will allow more interaction between teacher and students. Benefits, according to the Department of Defense Education Activity include the following:

•The school building reinforces the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math curriculum with systems and building components exposed to provide real-world relevance and examples.

•The school provides student-centered facilities.

•The school provides flexibility and adaptability, which will accommodate multiple learning modalities and allow future changes as programs evolve and grow.

•The school is designed for a student-centered education with functional spaces that allows students to develop skills and habits needed for success in the 21st century.

•The use of renewable energy production.

The school construction is part of the Military Construction program, according to DoDEA.

Started in 2010, DoDEA has begun the process of renovating its schools to meet the 21st century design concept. Eventually, 134 schools will meet these standards.
