FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 15, 2014) -- The Fort Benning American Red Cross is looking for volunteers.
The types of volunteers needed include office volunteers such as case workers to handle emergency messaging, volunteers for positions across post such as the library or veterinary clinic and volunteers to help with the patient advocacy program at Martin Army Community Hospital, said Michele Walton, services to the Armed Forces specialist for the Georgia region.
"We have something for everyone no matter what your interests are," Walton said. "We are very flexible. Even if you can give one hour per week or be full time -- the Red Cross is a volunteer-driven organization and we are very thankful for whatever the volunteers can give."
"It's a blessing to me to be able to help people," said Tom Tuten, a volunteer with the organization.
He said he was looking for something to fill his time since retiring from civil service. What Tuten didn't expect was what he got out of helping others.
Tuten has volunteered with the American Red Cross since April 2011 as a driver transporting people to and from MACH.
Serving others helps everyone involved -- providing a service to another person while the volunteer feels good about what they do, he said.
