SCHWEINFURT, Germany -- The legal office's tax center opens Feb. 6 and will remain operational through June 16, despite the garrison's imminent closure and shrinking community.
The Schweinfurt tax center -- located at the Conn Annex across the street from Conn Barracks, Bldg. 7, rooms 102 and 103 -- offers free tax preparation and filing for the Schweinfurt military community.
February 6 marks the center's grand opening, but tax center staff -- all of whom are IRS-trained -- will begin taking appointments as early as Feb. 4. To make an appointment, call DSN 353-8286, CIV 09721-96-8286.
The center will remain open through the overseas extended deadline, Jun. 16, but community members who expect to owe money should file before April 15, the tax-filing deadline for stateside Americans.
"That way you can avoid any additional interest or penalties on the amount you owe the IRS," said Capt. Allyson Montgomery, a legal assistance attorney and the tax center's officer in charge.
"Please set aside about 45 minutes to an hour for the appointment and don't forget to bring important documents including your DOD ID card, your Social Security card, ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number) and other specialized documents like retirement account information, student loan interest, mortgage interest or any other documents that apply to your special tax case," Montgomery said.
Another important reminder is that to file a joint return, both spouses must be present. But if your spouse is deployed or unavailable, you have an option.
"If your spouse is deployed or in the United States or otherwise unavailable to come in and sign the form, please bring in a notarized power of attorney that authorizes you to file the tax return. That way we can file the return without your spouse being present," said Montgomery.
Special powers of attorney for taxes are available at the Schweinfurt legal center at Conn Barracks, Bldg. 1. Walk in or schedule an appointment by calling DSN 353-8384, CIV 09721-96-8384.
Taxpayers with complex returns should take extra time to ensure that their documents are in order and should always have a copy of their prior year tax return available for the tax preparer. A tax return is complicated when it includes capital gains, rental real estate income or loss, foreign earned income or foreign taxes paid, or multiple state income tax returns.
The garrison shuttle buses have added an additional stop at the Conn Annex on their route to accommodate community members who need to visit the tax center.
"I'm excited for this tax season. It is our last tax season here in USAG Schweinfurt so we ask for everyone to come out and get your taxes prepared for free," said Montgomery. "So call or stop in."
