FORT GORDON, Ga. - (Jan. 10, 2014) The traffic circle on Fort Gordon will be expanding thanks to the addition of a new street that is set to open in February.
"A new access street has been built off Kilbourne Street that will detour traffic through the installation's traffic circle," said Willie McClinton Jr., Fort Gordon chief of police.
The building of the new road is to reduce traffic volume in high pedestrian areas.
"The purpose is to allow south bound traffic on Kilbourne Street to cut over to Lane Avenue. The benefit is to reduce traffic on Chamberlain Avenue to avoid troop crossings," said McClinton.
Lane Avenue, Kilbourne Street and 19th Street act like a bypass for traffic to go around congested areas.
"The purpose is to keep traffic off of Rice Road and Brainard Avenue," said Lt. Col. Hollis L. Bush Jr., Fort Gordon Provost Marshall. "You want to keep traffic away from the school zone and to detour traffic away from the playground."
Driving through the traffic circle may prove unfamiliar for some drivers however the key is to put safety first.
"There are different avenues of approach when driving through the traffic circle," said McClinton. "When people begin to enter the traffic circle they need to show courtesy/right of away to the people in the traffic circle. Those drivers who are entering the circle need to yield or stop."
