Community Girl Scouts serenaded shoppers at the Fort Belvoir Exchange Dec. 19 during their annual Christmas caroling event.
More than 60 Girl Scouts ages 6 to 11 sang holiday classics including "The Twelve Days of Christmas," "Silent Night" and "Here Comes Santa Claus" while parents snapped photos and passersby stopped to listen at the Exchange entrance.
Troops in Girl Scout Service Unit 53-5 (at Fort Belvoir, Va.) gather every year to carol as a way to give back to the community and promote awareness of the Girl Scouts program at Fort Belvoir, said Nicole Binstock, leader for Brownie Troop 3479.
"I think that it makes people aware that we gather as Girl Scouts and that we try to do community events," she said. "It gives the girls a sense of giving back and it also gives them a sense of working together for something."
Singing holiday songs also helps get the community in the holiday spirit, said parent Ashley Frevent, Air Force spouse.
"We like to do community things and brighten everyone's day and spread Christmas cheer," she said.
Her daughter Avery, 9, joined Brownie and Junior Troop 22 to make friends, and the Christmas caroling helped her do just that.
"It's fun to get to know other girls," Avery said.
Carson Krahe, 9, in Junior Troop 2350, added the Christmas caroling is just one of many events the girls do throughout the year.
"We do a whole bunch of stuff," Krahe said. "We did the detective badge and the music badge. We printed our fingerprints. It was fun"
Parent Toni Vega, Army spouse, hoped the Scouts' singing helped shine a light on Fort Belvoir's Girl Scouts program.
"It gives the community an opportunity to see what the Girl Scouts (organization) does for the Fort Belvoir community itself," she said. "The girls have unity, even though they're from the little Daisies all the way up to the Juniors; they all get to meet up at one spot and participate in something that everyone can enjoy."
