WASHINGTON (Dec. 12, 2013) -- Command Sgt. Maj. David O. Turnbull, U.S. Army Military District of Washington, presented the Meritorious Service Medal to Sgt. 1st Class Thomas E. Bish, Deputy Chief of the MDW Medical Evacuation to CONUS Hospitals (MECH) Army Liaison Team during an awards ceremony held at Fort Lesley J. McNair.

The MECH Team consists of medical technicians, doctors, nurses, and other staff who welcome the wounded, sick, or injured patients returning from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center through Ramstein AFB in Germany. The MDW MECH team also provides support to civilians and other military branches arriving on MEDEVAC aircraft.

Bish's concern for service members and his ability to leverage every available resource on their behalf were apparent as he assisted over 9,000 wounded and injured warriors evacuated from overseas. He distributed $600,000 in Army Emergency Relief grants to patients, planned and executed tours for holdovers, and coordinated with Army and Joint Agencies to ensure that military members were given the best care possible from Sept. 24, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2014.
