Commentary: Bowl season is here

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Dec. 18, 2013) -- Get the snacks ready, the college bowl season is here.

The college bowl season kicks off Dec. 21 with two ranked teams, No, 20 ranked Fresno State taking on No. 25 University of Southern California in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl.

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr has had a great year, passing for almost 5,000 yards and 48 touchdowns, with half of those going to sophomore wide receiver Davante Adams, who hauled in 23 touchdowns on 122 receptions and 1,645 yards.

While I don't follow the team, those are impressive numbers no matter what team you follow.

Fresno State is 11-1 going into the bowl game against USC and amasses an average of 409 passing yards a game and averages 160 rushing yards a game.

For my money on opening day, this is the game I will be watching on the opening of the bowl season.

While all of the Bayonet and Saber prognosticators picked USC to come out on top, I believe Fresno State will be too much for USC offensively, my pick is Fresno State.

And then there is the culmination of the college football season with Florida State taking on Auburn in the national championship game Jan. 6.

Since we are so close to Auburn, the emotional choice for most, including most of our prognosticators is Auburn.

I will have to go against the grain with those who picked Auburn and pick Florida State.

While Auburn took down perennial powerhouse Alabama in the Iron Bowl, Florida State has been more consistent throughout the year, rather than come on late in the season.

Although it is true that a team peaking at the right time of the season is a dangerous team, I believe Florida State will continue with being consistent and finish out the season as the national champion.

I believe the biggest match up is going to be in the trenches and whoever wins that battle will win the game.

Florida State's defense has given up about 116 yards per game rushing, while Auburn's ground game is averaging about 335 yards per game.

In defending the pass, Florida States strength is in the secondary.

If the Tigers can exploit Florida State's 3-4 defense, it will be a long day for the Seminoles.

Offensively, let's not forget the Seminoles have this year's Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston at quarterback.
