Become member of historic cavalry unit here, learn how this Sunday

As part of their recruiting effort for the next Cavalry Riding School, members of B Troop, 4th Regiment, U.S. Cavalry (Memorial) will staff a static display on historic Brown Parade Field on Sunday, 1 -- 3 p.m., during the historic tour of homes. Troopers will be available to answer questions and tell how to apply for the riding school. They will also conduct cavalry riding demonstrations.

Of the eight Army horse detachments throughout the nation, Fort Huachuca has the only all-volunteer unit. This provides a unique opportunity for anyone stationed here, military or civilian, to participate in what is considered an exciting program. No prior riding experience is necessary. All equipment, uniforms and horses are provided. Applicants do not incur any expenses for participation other than their time and effort.

Applicants must endure and successfully complete a unique, rigorous, four-month training program to win the coveted brass spurs of an Army cavalryman. Students are taught the military riding style and are required to use tack authentic to the 19th century Army cavalry. The first phase of training teaches the students basic riding skills and is considered the toughest part.

After testing out of this phase, students learn the basics of ceremonial and cavalry riding, including open-field charges. After completing the second phase, the riders are assigned a mount and introduced to competitive cavalry riding. This includes field jumping and use of weapons while mounted.

The next cavalry riding school will begin on Feb. 1. Training is conducted outside of duty hours, usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and occasionally on Saturday mornings.

To be eligible, applicants must weigh 200 pounds or less, have a year remaining at Fort Huachuca after graduating from the riding school, be physically fit, and have time to participate.
