FORT SILL, Okla. (Dec. 12. 2013) -- The Lawton/Fort Sill Bass Anglers 2013 fishing season saw many opportunities for anglers to get out on the water, test their skills and luck against Mother Nature and their fellow competitors.

When it was all said and done and the last fish released, the 2013 season was pretty good.

With Waurika Lake as the only exception, many of the lakes received a ton of water during the fishing months. That was a pleasant surprise.

Here are highlights from the season.

While the number of limits was down to 10 this season, the number of actual fish weighed was 152 for the eight tournaments. The total bag weight for fish caught was 297.44 pounds making that almost a 2-pound average.

The heaviest limit for the year was during the April tournament on the Duncan City Lakes. The 22.14-pound creel was an impressive catch.

Each year the club rewards the angler with the most points collected throughout the fishing season with its Angler of the Year (AOY) award.

The winner was no stranger to this award but it was something he still felt proud to achieve. John Deel finished the season at the top of the heap and took home the prize.

Members also receiving awards were second place AOY Alan Stevenson and third place AOY John Ferguson.

Bo Middleton weighed the heaviest fish for the season, a nice 7.04-pound lunker caught on Arbuckle Lake during the August tournament. He was awarded the Big Bass of the Year.

This past season was the first year in the club's history that it recognized one of its own for a lifetime membership award.

Deel has been a member of the club off and on since the early '90s as he transferred in and out of Fort Sill as an active-duty Soldier. After he retired as a sergeant major he became a tireless supporter of the club. Deel constantly stepped up and served as the president as well as secretary/treasurer on numerous occasions.

His contributions to the sport and the community have served the Soldiers and anglers of the Lawton-Fort Sill community tremendously over the last 20 plus years.

Deel and his wife have moved from the area but we are certain we will see him on the waters on those occasions he visits.

We congratulate all the winners, and we look forward to seeing you on the water next year.

If you are interested in angling fun, join us next year as once again we will compete on area lakes once a month beginning in March. Meetings will begin in February and will be held the first Wednesday monthly at the Fort Sill Wildlife Center Classroom at the Sportsmens Services on Fort Sill. You do not have to own a boat to join. Annual membership begin in February.
