Fort Benning Holiday Events: Post prepares for Santa

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov. 27, 2013) -- Tis' the season to take your Family out to enjoy Fort Benning's annual holiday events, beginning Tuesday.

Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony

6 p.m. Tuesday at the Field of Four Chaplains.

The annual event includes the lighting of the Christmas Tree and Menorah, representing Christian and Jewish faiths respectively. The Maneuver Center of Excellence Band and Fort Benning school choirs will provide music. After the ceremony, Fort Benning military police will escort Santa Claus to his workshop to meet Families.

Airborne Tower Lighting

5-7 p.m. Dec. 5 at Eubanks Field

Santa Claus will also make an appearance and drop in during the ceremony, which is hosted by the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Other activities include the opening of the 34-foot towers for Families to experience Airborne training. This event is open to the public.

Tour of Homes

2-6 p.m. Dec. 7

Visit Fort Benning's historical homes and get holiday decoration tips. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. This event is for people ages 14 and older and is open to the public. No strollers are allowed. To purchase tickets, visit www.fortbenningcsc.org/events/tour-of-homes or at A Bit of Benning on 229 Ingersol Road.

Maneuver Center of Excellence Band's Holiday Concert

2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Columbus RiverCenter

Enjoy holiday music during the MCoE Band's annual holiday concert. Admission is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets will be available Dec. 1 and can be picked up at the RiverCenter Box Office.

Trees for Troops

10:30 a.m. Dec. 12 at Wetherby Field

Active-duty Soldiers and their Families are able to obtain one free tree from this annual event. The trees are donated by Christmas tree growers. You must have a military ID card in order to get a tree. Supplies are first-come, first-served, with approximately 800 trees to be distributed. Each tree has a card attached from those who want to show their support to Soldiers and their Families during the holiday season, said Amanda Reitz, special events coordinator at Outdoor Recreation.

Holiday at Riverside

6-7:45 p.m. Dec. 12 at Riverside, the Commanding General's Quarters.

Fort Benning Families get another opportunity to meet with Santa and enjoy Family-friendly activities at Riverside.

Bicity Christmas Parade

10-11 a.m. Dec. 14 starting at the corner of Dillingham Street and Broad Street in Phenix City.

Watch bands, including the MCoE band, floats, antique cars and more at the annual Bicity Christmas Parade.
