When the scuffle ended and raindrops had cleared the dust from the air, Soldiers in Signal orange defeated those in Military Intelligence blue by a narrow margin, winning Friday's flag football game 14-13.
The annual Turkey Bowl, played on Fort Huachuca's Warrior/Sentinel field, saw Team Signal take the trophy from the hands of Team Intelligence, the winners of the 2012 game. During last year's game, the men in blue snatched the trophy from the orange-clad warriors who seemed to vow they would not let them keep the trophy for two years in a row.
Team Signal was the victor in 2011 and again this year. They get to keep the coveted award until next year, when the two teams will vie for victory again during the next annual event.
Will Blue capture it in 2014 and the trophy change hands once more?
The spectators will have to wait another year for the answer to that question.
The real benefit of this friendly football game goes to the hungry Families who use Fort Huachuca's Chaplain's Food Locker. As part of the annual Turkey Bowl, donations of nonperishable food items are accepted for the food closet. More than a ton and a half of canned and boxed goods was collected during Friday's game.
As in the past, no matter what the rivals felt about the outcome of the game, they and the audience paired up to ensure the less fortunate will not go hungry during the holiday season. In addition, they got to enjoy an afternoon of sport and camaraderie prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.
