FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov. 6, 2013) -- The Fort Benning Bengals football team is seeking help in collecting canned goods for those in need during the holiday season.
Krystin McAdams, assistant coach and team mom for the Fort Benning Bengals, said they are encouraging each player, and the public to donate food for the upcoming holiday season, specifically Thanksgiving.
"We have titled this food drive 'Earn Your Stripes for the Bengals,'" she said. "We are asking the players to donate food items to match the number of touchdowns they have scored for the season for the Fort Benning food bank."
So far, she said, the drive has accumulated 104 items with a goal of 300 items.
"The items are specifically for the Fort Benning food bank, which will be used locally for only Fort Benning Families," she said.
McAdams said the idea spawned from Child, Youth & School Services requirement for a community project. She said she brought up several ideas to the parents, and wanted to do something that included the players, rather than something like adopting a family for Thanksgiving.
She said boxes for those who want to bring food items are located at the home games and at Parent Central, Building 104, Marchant Avenue, on Main Post located between Carmike Cinemas and Burger King and near the car wash.
"We have had a great response so far," she said. "The kids are excited about it, the parents are excited about it … especially since it will help Families right here on post. We will do this all the way right up until Thanksgiving. That is a big time of need."
McAdams said one of the important aspects of the food drive was the affect the government shutdown had on the stores of the food bank.
"We were told by personnel at the food bank they were completely depleted due to the government shutdown," she said. "They are really counting on us to help replenish some of their stock."
If you want to help the Bengals help those in need on Fort Benning with contributions to their "Earn Your Stripes for the Bengals" food drive, you may drop off items at any Bengals home game and at Parent Central.
