Readiness is drug free

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 23, 2013) -- Monday was the start of national Red Ribbon week. Approximately 80 million people participate annually. National Red Ribbon Week recognizes our continued commitment to eradicating drug abuse.

We also recognize the sacrifices of those who work to keep America drug free. One individual who inspired national Red Ribbon Week is U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique Camarena. Camarena, who served previously in the U.S. Marine Corps, made the ultimate sacrifice while working undercover in Mexico in February 1985. He was murdered while battling drug traffickers.

This year the theme for national Red Ribbon Week is A Healthy Me is Drug Free. Leaders will educate Soldiers and Civilian employees on the devastating effects of illegal drug use. Please participate in Red Ribbon activities across post this week. For more information regarding these activities, contact Oskar Schlomer at 706-545-7027 or oskar.h.schlomer.civ@mail.mil.

Drug use in our Army is unacceptable. We must continue to educate Soldiers and Families of the destructive effects of drug abuse.

This includes illegal drug use as well as misuse of legal pharmaceuticals. It is imperative to promote a drug-free lifestyle to maintain combat readiness. We can make national Red Ribbon Week a success and send the message that A Healthy Me is Drug Free.

One Force, One Fight!
