REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- The Army Materiel Command staff principals gathered to honor a senior logistician at U.S. Transportation Command, Oct. 18.

Lt. Gen. Kathleen M. Gainey, the deputy commander of USTRANSCOM, received the Gen. Brehon B. Somervell Medal of Excellence award by surprise during a staff meeting at USTRANSCOM. Gen. Dennis L. Via, AMC commander, made formal remarks during the award presentation via the Video Teleconferencing Communication system.

"I certainly wanted to be there in person to recognize a great patriot, Soldier and friend. We commend your magnificent career," Via said.

Gen. William M. Fraser III, commander of USTRANSCOM, presented the award on behalf of Via, stating that he couldn't think of anyone more deserving of the Somervell Medal of Excellence.

"She has dedicated her life to making sure every Solider was supported," Fraser added.

"Thank you all very much. This means very much being a logistician and this is what it's all about -- teamwork -- to support the joint warfighter," Gainey said.

The Gen. Brehon B. Somervell Medal of Excellence award recognizes individuals who excel in the area of multifunctional logistical support and demonstrate a commitment to duty and excel in it.

USTRANSCOM is a strategic partner of AMC. Together the commands provide valuable materiel to the joint warfighter in theater by air, rail, sea, and land.
