YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- The U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan volunteer of the quarter was named at the Army Community Services building, Oct. 1.
"We are here today to recognize the people who deserve it," said Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Willing, sergeant major of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. "Efforts of volunteers are definitely saving money for the Army. Also, volunteering promotes other members of the community to step forward and make a move to make their community a better place."
Seven community members were recognized; Jeff Bernstein, Brandy Gaskins, Sabrina Mathis, John Maxwell, Marcille Millet and Elizabeth Mojica. Of all the nominees, Sabrina Mathis, family advocacy program assistant, was selected as volunteer of the quarter. Mathis has volunteered for various fields including organizing the AFAP conference and managing new volunteers
"Being recognized or not is actually not a great matter to me," Mathis said. "My motivation was to support my husband who is in the Army, and volunteering was my way to properly do it. However, I do think that recognizing the volunteer of the quarter means a lot. It lets the volunteer know that efforts he has made positive changes to the community, and encourages other people to volunteer."
As Mathis said, the recognition ceremony inspires volunteers around the garrison by letting them know their actions have positive influence for everyone. Army Community Service also promotes what volunteer work can bring to the community. Experiencing new career and working environments, meeting new people, and contributing to the support of others are all examples of what volunteer work can bring to an individual and the community.
Volunteers can be recommended and nominated by any member of the community, and will be recognized each quarter after an evaluation is done by Army Community Services and Volunteer Corps.
