ANSBACH, Germany (Oct. 10, 2013) -- A security specialist with the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security's Garrison Security Office, whose innovative contributions last year in a previous assignment led to an Army Installation Management Command-level security award, was recognized here Aug. 23 during a video-teleconference between the USAG Ansbach command group and leaders at IMCOM headquarters in San Antonio.
Manuel "Manny" Melendez, who won the 2012 G-2 Thomas Dillon Award for Security Excellence for his work at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, and who was notified in May before relocating to Ansbach, was formally presented the award personally by Col. Christopher M. Benson, USAG Ansbach commander, and recognized concurrently via VTC by Lawrence Gillis, deputy director of Army G-2.
The Thomas Dillon Award for Security Excellence is an annual honorary award to an Army security professional for outstanding contributions and performance in support of security programs that further the Army's security posture and protect National Defense Information.
Melendez's award-winning project included a number of security posters using Dugway people, locations and wildlife, and a few posters gave a nod to the humorous by using an alien motif. The posters have been placed in a number of locations around Dugway. Melendez also created an educational PowerPoint slideshow for a number of avenues including the commander's access channel.
"He has done an exceptionally creative job in the security field," said his wife Jannan. "I could not be prouder of him."
"[Melendez] is a clear example of the level of dedication and performance we see every day and have come to expect from our security professionals assigned to IMCOM," said Israel Garcia, chief of security at IMCOM headquarters.
